Genre Decision Blog

Our opening sequence will be under the science-fiction genre. We came to this decision after researching the conventions of the genre. At first we were debating over picking the sci-fi genre or the supernatural genre. Our opening sequence is about a guy who sees the future. The character always had visions of lighthearted moments, however, this time it would be different. The vision the character had was the death of his dear friend. This horrendous visions shocks him, making him want to prevent it from happening. We researched movies that dealt with that sci-fi genre and supernatural genre. After we looked into the movies, we decided. When we looked at the different sci-fi movies, we realized it was similar to our idea. Sci-fi movies sometimes involves characters with hidden abilities like our pitch. The sci-fi genre consists of imaginative and futuristic concepts. Some example films are 'The Giver', 'The Maze Runner', 'Arrival', 'Men In Black: International', and 'The Space Between Us'. During our research we found articles which gave us further explanation. We took a look as well into different types of sci-fi movies. We also found slides, PowerPoints that gave us detailed descriptions about the genre. 

We initially did research for the genres thriller, drama, and action. After discussing what our opening sequence is about, we came to the conclusion that the genres thriller, action, and drama did not fit the idea of our pitch. 


The sci-fi genre is a genre we are really interested in. We look forward to the planning, and production of this project.

Final task: Filming and editing process

As of recently, my partner and I have to decided to start our filming process on March 8, 2021. Unfortunately we could not begin filming before due to serveral reasons. Our actress playing Irene, is out of town and will be arriving March 6, 2021, which is the major reason of why we decided to begin on March 8. The actor playing Johnny also could not film earlier because he had plans involving school homework, studying for several tests and work. My partner and I looked out for our actors and decided to begin filming on a day everybody would be available.  We finished all of our planning and research and now we will prepare for filming. As of now, we have not changed or added new locations for our opening sequence. We have set all of our plans for our settings and when we will go to our assigned locations. Genre Research: The Giver

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have? Another movie we will use to base our final task on is The Giver.  The Giver is a science fiction movie which is based on a novel. The setting of  The Giver was in an isolated piece of land broken off and disconnected from the rest of the world. This set up the plot of the story of the film.  In the movie they use a lot of different filming techniques to express the different emotions throughout the film.  Since the movie is about "The receiver of memories" they use zooms, close-ups, establishing shots, track, mid-shots, low and high angles and many more to show the emotions of the characters in the story.
