Genre Research: The Giver

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

  • Another movie we will use to base our final task on is The Giver. The Giver is a science fiction movie which is based on a novel.
  • The setting of The Giver was in an isolated piece of land broken off and disconnected from the rest of the world. This set up the plot of the story of the film.
  • In the movie they use a lot of different filming techniques to express the different emotions throughout the film.
  • Since the movie is about "The receiver of memories" they use zooms, close-ups, establishing shots, track, mid-shots, low and high angles and many more to show the emotions of the characters in the story. Since in the story the giver is giving the receiver all of his memories and teaching him the emotions one by one these different CAMS portray the different emotions.
  • The giver shows a lot of technology with the use of holograms, fake trees, the houses are full of technology as well.
  • They also lived in places with advanced technology that gave them injections, prepared their food, and the use bikes that were simple but better than the bikes we see in reality. This was used to contribute to the setting of the future. Almost everything was done through electronic technology.
  • They used planes that seemed more advanced and looked like bigger drones as well.
  • Some of the elements that can be seen in The Giver would be the use of advances in science, technology, fantasy, and the use of a new political system.
  • In the movie, they use the advances in science injections and pills to control their emotions.
  • Fantasy was greatly used in The Giver. They believed that if they crossed a specific border, it would release memories of the past and people would finally feel different emotions and see different colors.
  • They had set a new political system with rules provided to prevent any differences between the members of the community.
  • The Giver contains the narrative of good and evil between the main character and the “elder” members of the community since they are the ones controlling the younger generations.
  • They also use futuristic props in the form of technology used at home, which is used to make the viewers believe in what they are seeing.
  • The use of filters can be seen through the whole movie. They use the filter only displaying the world as completely grey to contribute to the plot. Then, it changed slowly into a world of full color. They also use other editing techniques like slow motion and they edit in flashbacks and holograms of different people.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?

The elements that we liked from The Giver was the advances in technology and fantasy. The advances in technology were really Interesting and opened our imagination to future technology like in the movie with the automatic daily injections. We also liked fantasy because they found it appealing how the main character risked his life and crossed a border to save everyone and give them their memories back.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

The element that did not appeal to us in this film was the implication of a new political system. The people in the movie were restricted and could not see the beautiful memories of life. This movie gave us another perspective of the sci-fi genre that we really like.
