Genre Research: The Space Between Us

What elements of the genre you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

  • The first movie we will use to base off our final task on is ‘The Space Between Us.’ The space between us is a romance science fiction film Initially we did not know our film could only be one genre so we were going to make it a romance/sci-fi film. We decided to use this as part of our research because of the similarity in stories. The space between us, however, has nothing to do with hidden abilities, but instead with a boy who was born on Mars.
  • The setting is set on Mars for the beginning of the movie and on Earth as well. This was to give a different setting from our reality to connect the unfamiliar with the familiar to us.
  • The movie was also set in the future to allow viewers to believe in what they were seeing in the movie.
  • There was a lot of establishing shots to show the setting as well as close-ups, long shots, over-the-shoulder, mid-shots, handheld, track, and crane shots used in this movie.
  • The main character in the movie was raised in a different environment from different teenagers so he also relied on old movies to practice his social skills.
  • The use of vintage props and old movies shows the development of time.
  • They also used special effects and editing to go into space, and back to Earth and to Mars.
  • This movie uses the elements of technology, fantasy, and new scientific principles.
  • In the movie, the main character is born on Mars, which obviously shows advancements in technology and fantasy.
  • People being born on Mars is not something normal at all so it uses the fantasy element. The use of space crafts, and planets also demonstrates the use of the fantasy element.
  • They are trying to create a society on Mars as well which portrays new scientific principles and ideas.
  • The main character has a health problem, and cannot go to earth and so the doctors of the movie help him and use the advancements in science to give him surgery to help him which once again shares the advance of science.
  • ‘The Space between us’ also contains the large use of futuristic props. Throughout the movie they use a lot of advanced technology in the form of self-driving cars, transparent computers, and phones.
  • The use of robots is also seen in this movie. Besides showing technology it also shows fantasy since the character grew up with a  robot “best friend” which is not common and can help viewers understand that the character grew up surrounded in ultimate technology and by scientists who traveled to Mars.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you liked?

  • The elements that we liked of ‘The Space Between Us’ is the use of the technology element and fantasy.
  • During the movie there is a lot of parts with advanced technology and this is to create a connection between reality and fiction.
  • Fantasy is really interesting for us because we really like the sci-fi genre. It helps expand our imagination to ideas like going out to space and to create a whole new place for humans.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
  • The element that did not appeal to us was the time of the movie.
  • The movie was set in the future with all the advanced technology props, however, sometimes that was not portrayed the same with their other surroundings. Many were still living the day regular people do today except with extremely advanced cars, computers, and phones which might have been to keep the movie realistic but to emphasize on the science fiction of the film.
