Genre Research: Thriller

Our PowerPoint is about the conventions of the thriller genre. For example, we provided the common  lighting, angles, camera movement, CLAMPS, elements, and sound. The usual type of lighting we have seen in thriller movies are low-key lighting and high-key lighting. Low-key lighting can be seen in movies like 'Us', which uses low-key lighting to emphasize the suspension behind the characters and to build anticipation from the viewers. High-key lighting is seen in movies like 'Black Swan' in which they use this lighting to intensify the scene. The frequent angles we have seen in our research for thriller movies are both low angle and high angle. Low angles are seen in the movie 'Us' to either demonstrate dominance or vulnerability depending on the situation the character is in and the expressions of the character. High angles can be seen in the movie 'The invisible Man' to portray vulnerability from the character who is looking up to what is higher than them. The typical camera movements we found are tracking and crane. Tracking scenes in the movie 'The shining' displays the camera following the character and it also helps to the viewer in the same situation as the character. Crane movement is used in the thriller 'Baby Driver' increasing the anxiety from those who do not know what to expect.

The conventions involved with the CLAMPS can vary depending on the type of thriller. We found in the thriller 'Us' costumes which look like uniforms whereas in 'Black Swan' we can see the costume of a dancer because of the type of character. The acting can also vary based on the character's story. The props are formed from the surroundings of the character; ranging from weapons to anything that anybody in the regular basis. The setting of a movie relies on the background of the character and it can be anything you can imagine. The elements of the thriller genre are suspense, tension, excitement, terror, and anxiety. All these elements are valuable components to a thriller movie because without them a thriller movie will not be what it is. Viewers are attracted to this genre because of its elements and emotions. The most common sound in a thriller movie is non-diegetic sound which can be gunshots, screaming, or crying.

Some more thriller examples are 'Escape Room', 'Doctor Sleep', 'Baby Driver', 'Annabelle' and 'Glass'.

We collected pictures that represented the above stated conventions. In order to collect all of our information we used clips of the movies we had already researched and watched. We also used articles to enlighten ourselves. In the process of making the PowerPoint we thought of what ways we wanted to design our PowerPoint as a whole. We used a lot of functions to create our designs.
