The titles that are displayed during the beginning of the opening sequence are Marvel Studios, Universal pictures, and Valhalla Motion pictures production. Then, it presents the title of the movie and the cast of the movie. It also gives credit to who did the casting, music, music supervisor, associate producer, editors, production designer, director of photography, executive producers, who produced and directed the movie, screen story and screenplay creators.
What images are prioritized in the opening sequences?
The images that are prioritized include the Marvel opening theme, X-rays, cells, veins, medical tests, laboratory, scientists/doctors, scans, and green eyes. When it briefly shows the transformation of Hulk from human to superhero there is a series of shots of electricity, chaos, people bleeding and unconscious, and police men trying to stop Hulk. Then it also shows the image of a woman in the hospital and Hulk is with her now in his human body, however, Hulk leaves when the police arrive. They also show parts of a surveillance wall that involves pictures of several characters, and a compilation of newspapers reporting the accidents cause by Hulk. Lastly they show images of the police searching, plans fingerprints, and a metronome. Halfway they also use the image of the movie title with illumination behind it.
What connotations do these images carry?
The connotation behind the Marvel opening theme is to show the studio that produced the movie and it also links the movie to the Marvel universe. The connotations behind the laboratory and its possessions were to represent the experiment they were conducting with Hulk's character. Then, it shifts to Hulk transforming and tearing his shirt apart which gives the representation of Hulk's character since he is considered "a green monster." The connotations behind the woman are to show that she probably is important to Hulk and since he hurt her the police are now after him. The connotations behind the surveillance wall and the newspapers were to represent the search by the police to find Hulk. The connotation behind the metronome might have been to represent time passing.
How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
The film establishes the feeling of the genre by showing a laboratory which has to deal with science and science fiction. They also use images of cells, veins, and X-rays to further represent the experiment and the advances in science. The use of advanced technology when they conduct the experiment and search for Hulk also demonstrates the science fiction genre. In an image they show Hulk's blood changing from green to red which also shows the connotation of going from human to monster.
What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
The information about the plot of Hulk's story is displayed in a rapid manner which might have been a strategy to get the viewers anxious and to make them want to know more about the rest of the movie. They used dramatic and fast-paced music as well to get the viewers excited. They also used their strategy of introducing backstory and more context about Hulk and how he became Hulk. Hulk began as a comic so a lot of fans must have been anticipating the movie and showing the background of Hulk in the opening sequence was a great teaser.
How has technology been used effectively?
The opening sequence used these types of technology: editing, angles, and transitions. In this opening sequence they used montages, filters, high-key light filters, rapid images displays of cells, veins, and X-rays. They also used special effects to show the experiment of how Hulk transformed and distorted filters to express Hulk's emotions and monster-like actions. Some CAMS that were used are low and high angles, close-up shots, mid-shots, point-of-view, pan, track, and quick shots. The transitions they used in the opening sequence were fade-in, fade-out, and rapid zooms.
