Production Blog: Filming outside
On March 29 my partner, Margarita, and I decided to continue filming after school. We met up with the actress playing Irene as soon as school ended so we would have more time to film. Margarita had her parents drive her to the actresses house and I walked to the actresses house with the company of my mom. Initially we had planned to film at the pompano community park but this was not possible since the actress was left home alone to take care of her little sister so we decided to film in her backyard. We made sure to clean up the place where we would film.
Once we arrived we wore our masks and put on hand sanitizer to follow guidelines regarding safety for COVID-19. To prepare I went over the script once again with the actress to revise what the opening sequence included. I showed her the storyboard after the script as well to explain furthermore. I explained to the actress how the scenes would go and explained to her how to act out the scenes so that she would understand. We decided to film scenes three, six, and seven.
My partner and I prepared our phones and setting while the actress practiced her acting and added her own touch to the performance. While she practiced my partner and I would answer her questions about the scenes and the acting. Once she was ready, we began with scene three. For scene three, we had to film in Johnny’s perspective so I had to hold the phone up to my face to create the illusion of seeing the world through his eyes in a mid-shot. We recorded this a couple of times since the actress kept getting the timing wrong to look back since for the scene it is Irene and Johnny spending time together and she looks back at him and smiles. Since it was quite hot outside we took a quick break and went inside and we helped the actress practice her acting some more.
In short time we went back outside and recorded scene six, in which Irene is pulling Johnny who is walking behind her and she is taking him somewhere. For this scene I held the phone close to my face and used my head movement to make it seem as if from a high angle Johnny was looking at his and Irene’s hands then I would move my head back up to record the back of her head. We also recorded this a couple of times simply to get a better result. Finally for scene seven, Irene and Johnny are playing rock paper scissor shoot. This was also from Johnny’s point-of-view. I used my own hand to represent Johnny’s and recorded by pointing the camera down to show the actresses hand and my hand in the frame. After recording we revised the recordings with my partner and we were satisfied so we finished. This took around an hour to record and once we finished we wrapped up and I walked back to my house. I am very excited to see the result of all our work!
